After an odd childhood during which I received no education, I won a scholarship to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, after which I spent a number of years playing leading roles in the theatre and on television.

Later I began adapting stage plays for Television and co- wrote, with Edwin Apps, the situation comedy ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ for BBC TV which ran from 1966 to 1972 and had a weekly audience between 10 and 15 million viewers. In 1972 the BBC, in a misguided economy drive, wiped the series. However, a few episodes have accidentally survived and are now on DVD. The book ‘All Gas and Gaiters, the lost episodes’ was released in 2015 and is the first of four books in which all the wiped scripts will be published, together with Edwin’s and my memories of writing comedy for television fifty years ago, and because I was the first woman to ever do so, my recollections of the many difficulties I encountered with the exclusively male hierarchy of the BBC Light Entertainment Department. There was a play written on this subject, called ‘All Mouth and Trousers’ in which I play myself.
‘All Mouth and Trousers’ first broadcast on BBC Radio Four, 27 April 2016, and repeated on 31st January 2017.
